On January 22, SPJ members invited children from the Boys and Girls Club of St. Augustine to Flagler College to experience journalism for a day -the second annual Mission: Media event was fun and beneficial to both groups. Here are some sights from the day:
Cal Colgan, St. Augustine BGC Unit Director Justin Black and Shinavia Gore, 13, interview Shamus, a homeless man living in St. Augustine, for a story about homelessness in the city.
Shamus is gracious with his time.
Shinavia has a knack for reporting.
Back in the Gargoyle newsroom, Amber Jurgensen helps Stetson Myers, 11, write a story about Flagler students' reasons for choosing the college.
Brandon Nichols, 11, examines a camera while working with Angela Biggs and Caroline Young on a story about the effects of video games on children.
Naisha Stallion, 11, works with Phil Sunkel on a story about the MTV reality shows Jersey Shore and Teen Mom.
After four hours, the children's stories were posted on the Mission: Media page, which is hosted by the Flagler College newspaper, the Gargoyle. We will add to the page with every new Mission: Media event.
A big thank you to Professor Tracey Eaton who shot and edited a short video of Mission: Media -what a great way to capture the spirit of the day!
